Bemidji cyclist struck, injured during central Minnesota tour

PAYNESVILLE (AP) — A bicyclist was struck and injured by a car while riding in a bike tour across central Minnesota.

Fifty-five-year-old Gerald Johnson of Bemidji was struck Friday near Paynesville.

Johnson is the former police chief of Bemidji.

Johnson was airlifted to St. Cloud Hospital. He is in fair condition.

The Stearns County sheriff's office said the driver of a car went through an intersection without stopping at the stop sign and struck Johnson.

The St. Cloud Times reported Johnson was participating in day two of the "Bicycle Around Minnesota" tour traveling from Albany to Spicer.
