BEMIDJI -- A Bemidji man who sexually assaulted an underage girl must spend a year in the Beltrami County Jail.

Ryan William Anderson, 19, was convicted of and sentenced for one count of third-degree criminal sexual conduct Monday. Anderson, who was on probation after a different criminal sexual conduct conviction at the time of the crime, has been held in the Beltrami County Jail since June 1.

The 19-year-old was arrested after Beltrami County deputies received a tip that Anderson had picked up the 15-year-old victim from Lincoln Elementary School and was going to take her to Bemidji High School. Police stopped Anderson’s car and found the girl in the front passenger seat. Anderson was arrested for violating the conditions of his probation, which barred him from having unsupervised contact with people younger than 16.

A criminal complaint states that the victim and Anderson had been in a “significant sexual relationship” for two weeks. Minnesota law prohibits sexual contact when the victim is between the ages of 13 and 16 and the perpetrator is more than two years older.

A judge sentenced Anderson to two years and six months in prison and stayed the sentence, requiring him to serve one year in the jail. Anderson received 103 days of credit for time served.

A previous stay of execution from his last criminal sexual conduct conviction was also revoked.
