Local students compete in 2017 Mathcounts competition

The 2017 Mathcounts regional math competition was held Feb. 10 at Northland Community College in Thief River Falls. Nine teams consisting of 70 individuals competed in the competition.

Trophies were given to teams in the small and large school category. For the large schools, Bemidji Middle School finished in first place with Roseau in second place. For the small schools, St. Phillips of Bemidji finished in first place with Fertile Beltrami in second place. Students from Blackduck Schools also participated in the competition.

The team from Bemidji Middle School will attend the state level competition held March 10-11 in Plymouth. Team members are Ryan Rautio, Hayden Holmes, Colt Uhlenhopp and Sierrra Malterud.

The top 10 individuals received trophies. Local students awarded trophies include:

• First place: Ryan Rautio of Bemidji Middle School.

• Second place: Hayden Hommes of Bemidji Middle School.

• Fifth place: Colt Uhlenhopp of Bemidji Middle School.

• Sixth place: Kenneth Anttila of Bemidji Middle School .

• Ninth place: Ashley Maki of St Phillips of Bemidji.

• 10th place: Sierra Malterud of Bemidji Middle School.
