BSU plans to honor former Beaver, current 49ers GM Baalke Sunday
BEMIDJI – Trent Baalke is putting Bemidji State on the map. And now university officials would like to show the San Francisco 49ers general manager some support in advance of Super Bowl XLVII in New Orleans next Sunday, Feb. 3.
“We’re just very excited and very proud to have an alumnus of this caliber,” said Scott Faust, Bemidji State’s director of communications and marketing. “So we wanted to think of a way to show our support.”
To that end, BSU is inviting all students, staff, faculty, alumni and community members to participate in a group photograph at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Chet Anderson Stadium.
Attendees will hold up one banner with the 49ers logo and another that says, “Go Beavers.” They’ll take the photo from the press box at the stadium and send it to the 49ers and Baalke.
Faust said the university realizes it’s a lot of trouble to go for a photo, but said they wanted to come up with some way to show support for Baalke, a 1986 BSU alumnus who played linebacker for the Beaver football team from 1982-86.
“We had some emails bouncing around, wondering what we could do to get our message of support to him,” Faust said. “We’re proud of the connection and wanted to make sure he got it.”
One idea, Faust said, involved painting the 49ers logo in the middle of Lake Bemidji, but university officials quickly realized doing that would involve a lot more time and manpower than feasible.
“We thought this was the best way for everyone in the community to get involved,” Faust said. “It’s awesome to have this BSU connection. He was a big part of those teams in the 80s and a big part of this university’s success.
“It’s a special thing to be able to wish him well and this is a good way to get everyone involved.”
Attendees are encouraged to wear Bemidji State or 49ers apparel if possible.
