Bjerknes to plead guilty to state and federal charges

Man in custody after Cass Lake hostage situation

CASS LAKE -- A man who held a female hostage early Wednesday morning has been taken into custody by the Cass County Sheriff's Office.

Christopher Morris-Headbird, 31, of Cass Lake was arrested after the Cass County Sheriff's Office activated the Emergency Response Unit at approximately 2:50 a.m. Wednesday, according to a release issued by the sheriff's office.

Morris-Headbird reportedly barricaded himself and a female inside a residence while possessing a firearm and making threats. Once a search warrant was obtained, at approximately 5:40 a.m. law enforcement began a lengthy negotiation. After agreed upon terms were met the suspect surrendered the weapon and both Morris-Headbird and his hostage were removed from the residence.

Morris-Headbird remains in custody at the Cass County Jail. His criminal background includes felony burglary, robbery, assault and felon in possession of a firearm.

The Leech Lake Tribal Police, Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and Leech Lake Ambulance assisted at the scene.
