UPDATE: Girl injured in Eckles Township shooting Monday, suspect in custody

BEMIDJI -- A 17-year-old girl was shot in Eckles Township Monday night. The Beltrami County Sheriff's Office confirmed the shooting Tuesday morning.

The Beltrami County dispatch center received a 911 call at approximately 10 p.m. from the 17-year-old female. She said she had been shot several times when she was standing on the deck of her home on Palomino Lane NW, according to a release issued by the Beltrami County Sheriff's Office. The victim's name is not being released due to her age.

The release said responding deputies found the girl inside the door to her residence and began first aid until Bemidji Ambulance Service and North Country First Responders arrived on scene. The victim was transported to the emergency room at Bemidji Sanford Medical Center where she was stabilized and then sent to Duluth for further care.

The sheriff's office was assisted by Bemidji police and Minnesota State Patrol in canvassing and locating the suspect, Chad Eric Pickering, within minutes at his residence on the 6100 block of Palomino Lane NW -- two blocks from the victim's home.

Pickering, 40, was arrested for felony first-degree attempted murder and booked into the Beltrami County Jail Tuesday at 2:38 a.m. Investigators obtained a statement from Pickering at the jail. Investigation determined Pickering acted alone in committing the assault and there is no ongoing danger to the community. The investigation is being submitted to the Beltrami County Attorney's Office for consideration of charges.

The Beltrami County Sheriff's Office was assisted by members of the Bemidji Police Department, Minnesota State Patrol, Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, Bemidji Ambulance Service and North Country First Responders.
