Cass Lake IHS to undergo expansion

BEMIDJI -- The public is invited Thursday to celebrate the ceremonial groundbreaking of a planned expansion of the Cass Lake Indian Health Service facility.

The event will be12:30-3 the front parking lot.

The Cass Lake IHS is expanding its outpatient clinic space and will renovate much of the existing clinic, providing a new and updated facility.

This project will add almost 28,000 square feet of new space and remodel 8,500 square feet of existing space. The new outpatient and urgent care space will be the primary medical home for clinic patients with a new entrance, lobby and patient care rooms. The renovation will update the current clinic with a remodel of much of the interior as well as upgrades to the electrical and ventilation systems and replacement of the existing roof.

The $13,630,000 project budget for design and construction was approved by the Indian Health Service and Department of Health and Human Services. Nearly all of the budget will be funded by insurance collections from patient insurances.

Award of the construction contract will occur in May 2014. The construction will occur in phases over two years to reduce disruptions to patient care. The first phase, beginning this spring, will involve the parking lot and underground utility construction. The second phase, consisting of demolition of the current patient entrance and physical therapy as well as construction of the new clinic, is expected to begin this summer and take one year.
