BHS senior selected as Santa Lucia
Bemidji High School senior Madeline Erickson of Bemidji, daughter of Jeffrey Erickson and Cheryl Lundberg, has been named as this year's Santa Lucia.
Erickson will be honored at the 35th annual Santa Lucia Fest, a Swedish festival hosted by the Bemidji Chapter of the American Swedish Institute, held at 6 p.m. Monday, Dec. 13, at the Beaux Arts Ballroom, Hobson Memorial Union, Bemidji State University.
The Bemidji Chapter annually chooses a young woman of Swedish heritage to serve as the festival's Lucia. After a selection process that includes reviewing letters of application and conducting formal interviews before a panel of judges, a Lucia is chosen.
Erickson is involved in band, student congress, Moch Trial and Model United Nations at BHS. She is also a member of the National Honor Society and drama club.
Erickson began her participation in the Lucia Fest in the fourth grade and has been a tompte. She was the Apple Girls in fifth grade, a junior attendant and an attendant. In her application, Erickson wrote, "My Swedish heritage is something I am very proud of and I would like to share that with the community."
Tickets for the Lucia Fest are $18 for adults and $6 for children eight years of age and under. Tickets are available at Kelsey's Jewelry in downtown Bemidji, and at Ken K.
