CORRECTED: Paul Bunyan Trail link to be celebrated Saturday in annual trail ride

The completion of the Paul Bunyan Trail's Phase 2 Shingobee Connection will be celebrated Saturday, Aug. 21, during the sixth annual Paul Bunyan Trail Ride.

The mayors of Bemidji and Walker will inaugurate the trail with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. at Guthrie Town Hall, 44255 Rail Road in Guthrie.

Riders who want to cycle the new 20-mile connection will ride from Guthrie to Walker. Those interested are invited to gather at 9:30 a.m. at the Guthrie Town Hall.

During the ceremony, Gayle Quistgard will be recognized for promoting trail development. She will received the Wheels of Progress award from Mike Smith, North Country Snowmobile Association president, and Beltrami County Commissioner Joe Vene, who served on the Beltrami County Parks and Trail Advisory Board.

The trail ride will be dedicated in memory of the late Terry McGaughey, who was the initial organizer of the Paul Bunyan Trail in the mid 1980s.

Participants who wish to ride only to Walker can meet at 8 a.m. at Guthrie Town Hall and drop their bikes off and then drive to Walker to leave their cars. Jerry Downs will be available to shuttle up to six people back to Guthrie Town Hall.
