Beach at Diamond Point closed due to E. coli

The beach at Diamond Point Park has been closed due to an outbreak of E. coli.

According to a press release from the city of Bemidji:

The Minnesota Department of Health has reported that three confirmed cases of E. coli O157:H7 reported swimming at Diamond Point beach prior to their onsets July 8-11.

As a result, Diamond Point beach has been closed effective immediately and will remain closed until testing can confirm E. coli levels.

Testing is expected to be complete by late Friday afternoon.

Depending on test results, the beach may reopen late Friday or remain closed until E. coli levels fall to acceptable thresholds as determined by the Department of Health.

The outbreak was likely caused by ingestion of contaminated water while swimming.

Symptoms of E. coli O157:H7 include diarrhea, often bloody, vomiting and cramping. High fevers are not typically a common symptom. Local medical facilities are required to report cases of E. coli O157 to the MN Department of Health for further investigation.
