Pondering the puck: Bemidji Winterfest hosts 12 teams in pond hockey

Monte Draper | Bemidji Pioneer Mke Reis passes the puck down the ice during the Winterfest on Lake Bemidji pond hockey tournament on Saturday afternoon. Twelve teams faced off on Lake Bemidji during the Winterfest activities.

BEMIDJI — The weather was decent and the ice was just fine, too, as 12 teams took part in the pond hockey tournament as part of the Winterfest on Lake Bemidji activities on Saturday.

Competition started Friday, and the top six teams were bracketed in the Elite Division, while the other teams played in the Open Division. The Elite Division winners will net $1,500 and the Open Division will score $1,000.

“The weather has been great,” Adam Silewski, member of the Pond Hockey Planning Committee, said Saturday afternoon. “The ice is a little choppy, but it’s pond hockey; (the teams) are working through it.”

The teams hail mostly from Bemidji, but Silewski said there are some teams from Park Rapids and other surrounding cities. “But for the most part, the teams are from here. We don’t get teams from all over the state,” he added.

“But it has been really great.”
