Firefighters keep busy in December; Overall, more than 2,100 calls in 2013

BEMIDJI — The Bemidji Fire Department wrapped up 2013 with 2,108 calls for service, with 184 calls in December.

The department had five all-call firefighter pages and averaged just under six daily calls for service. On-duty career firefighters and dorm firefighters handled 97.3 percent of December fire calls.

An estimated $3,991,133 of property was threatened by fire in 2012. Property losses for the year totalled $1,576,172; $290,800 was lost in December alone.

Bemidji firefighters completed 87 hours of training, including ice rescue, fire behavior, building construction and personnel protective equipment. Twelve building inspections were conducted and 11 open burning permits were issued. The department held two safety presentations and conducted one fire station tour.

December fire calls included:

86 airport standbys

28 emergency calls

24 motor vehicle crashes with injuries

8 fire alarm responses

8 carbon monoxide incidents

6 building fires

4 vehicle fires
