Beltrami Humane Society awarded grants

BEMIDJI — The Beltrami Humane Society recently received three grants totaling $7,225.

A $5,000 operating grant was given by an anonymous foundation; a $1,000 special needs fund grant came from the Bissell Pet Foundation, and a $1,225 grant to develop a dog training and assessment program was received from the Best Friends Animal Society.

The $5,000 operating grant will be used to pay regular operating costs of the humane society and will cover utility bills for several months. The Bissell Pet Foundation grant will be used to create a special needs fund to help offset the costs of caring for animals with health or behavior issues and allow the humane society to offer them at a reduced adoption fee. The Best Friends grant will be used to initiate a new MOD squad, which is a volunteer-driven dog behavior and assessment program.
