Portion of Highway 2 closed after semi struck bridge

BEMIDJI -- The westbound lanes of U.S. Highway 2 near the 5th Street Northwest exit are now open, but the 15th Street bridge, struck by a semi Saturday afternoon, will remain closed indefinitely for repairs.

Beltrami County emergency management director Beryl Wernberg in a press release said the truck was hauling "heavy construction equipment," The truck struck the bridge just before 1 p.m. Saturday. No injuries were reported and the truck was not hauling any hazardous materials, Wernberg added.

The westbound lanes of Highway 2 were closed for several hours Saturday as crews cleaned up debris left on the roadway as a result of the accident. Motorists are urged to use caution and pay attention to detour signs in the area.
