Area students study abroad this summer

BEMIDJI — Bemidji students attending Concordia College are studying abroad this summer. Junior Tanner Dockendorf is studying Islands as Microcosms in Santorini, Greece; Senior Emily Frosaker is studying Vanished Civilizations of the Mediterranean in Athens, Delphi, Sorrento, Florence and Rome; and Sophomore Brianna Glynn is studying London: The Global City in London, England.

More than 120 students are studying abroad in Summer School Abroad Programs, May Seminars, Summer Field Study Programs and Semester Abroad programs offered through Global Learning at Concordia.

BSU expands nursing program

BEMIDJI — Starting next fall, registered nurses will be able to pursue a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the Bemidji School of Nursing on the campus of Century College in White Bear Lake.

According to a press release from BSU, the partnership was formalized in a May 14 signing ceremony at Century College.

The program will offer registered nurses a combination of on-campus and online courses. Enrollment will be capped at 40 students. The program is expected to fill quickly so interested students are encouraged to enroll as early as possible.

BHS student to attend state auxiliary

BEMIDJI — The Bemidji American Legion Auxiliary announced Daniela Maltais, junior at Bemidji High School, will be participating in the 67th Annual American Legion Auxiliary Girls State from June 9 through 15 at Bethel University in St. Paul.

Legion Auxiliary Girls State is a practical learning experience in local and state government. Maltais will participate in a seven-day mock government program and learn about civics and American government.

BHS grad awarded for achievement

BEMIDJI —Sam Bakke was awarded the Gold Medal of Achievement for outstanding achievement and leadership On April 27.

Bakke is currently a national Royal Ranger representative serving the Dakotas, Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin and northern Missouri. He completed his service requirement in Anatolia, Turkey in 2011 and serves on the Royal Ranger Honor Guard.

Bakke is active in the Crossroads Church youth group and a sophomore at Bemidji High School.
