TEAM Industries donates funds to Solway Elementary for books

Two members of TEAM Foundation were on hand Friday morning to distribute 263 new books at Solway Elementary. The books were purchased from a $3,400 gift from TEAM Industries to the school. Above, first-grader Jada Joyce and her reading buddy, fourth-grader Isabella Anderson, read one of the new books together. Coincidentally, Friday also happened to be the school’s annual Round-up Day, when the kitchen staff transforms the gymnasium into a country western barn dance theme. Monte Draper | Bemidji Pioneer

SOLWAY – Elementary students here cracked open hundreds of new books Friday morning as they celebrated a gift from TEAM Industries.

“(Students) were super excited,” said Julia Simons, the media specialist at Solway Elementary.

She said TEAM Industries provided to the school a $3,400 gift used to purchase 263 books in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM.

The gift was provided last spring after Simons approached the company, she said.

“Since their industry deals a lot with STEM topics, I wondered if they would like to help us buy books,” she said.

The collection of books includes fiction and nonfiction books appropriate for students in kindergarten through sixth grade.

Financial support from TEAM Industries arrived last spring and the books have been coming in throughout the last year, Simons noted.

Students had access to them for the first time Friday morning following a school program to thank TEAM Industries for its support.

Following the program, students broke into their reading buddies groups – one younger student paired with an older student – and held a read-in, or read-a-thon, with the new materials.

“(The new books) will be housed in the library so staff and students can use them,” Simons said. “We just want to surround them with books they would be to check out and enjoy.”
