The Blackduck Drakes Speech Team hosted a varsity tournament on Saturday, Feb. 3.
The Bemidji High School team captured the championship trophy with 151 total points and Thief River Falls placed second with 84. The Drakes placed third with 46, but since it is poor form to accept a team award at your home events, the Drakes deferred the third-place trophy, which went to Cass Lake-Bena. There was also a team trophy presented to the top point-earning school with entries under 10 speakers, won by the Pine River-Backus team.
Winners for the hometown Drakes speakers included second-place finishes for Kaydre Gullette in Extemp Reading, Caroline Cheney in Original Oratory, and Karly Pitzl in Storytelling. Taking third-place medals were Gullette and her duo partner, Anna Howard. Fourth place went to Kyla Pearson in Storytelling. Two Drakes speakers earned fifth-place medals: Savannah Marsh in Creative Expression and Anna Howard in Poetry. Winning sixth-place medals were Rachel Roberts in Extemp Reading and Haley Patel in Great Speeches. Regan Frenzel received an honorable mention in Prose.
The team is back in action at a varsity meet in Hibbing on Saturday, Feb. 10.
