The Bemidji High School show choir Vocalmotive received second-runner-up honors Saturday at the Linn-Mar Supernova competition in Marion, Iowa.

"They really stepped it up," Director Chris Fettig said. "The judges had lots of great comments and they got a wonderful critique."

Vocalmotive was initially awarded the runner-up trophy, but on Monday, Fettig received a phone call from competition officials informing him an error had been made in calculating the final scores.

The real runner-up was Fourth Avenue Jazz of City High School in Iowa City.

Fettig met with his team Tuesday and informed them of the error. The team decided to send the trophy to City High School along with a card of congratulations.

"The kids showed a lot of character," Fettig said. "I was really proud of the kids and their response to that situation."

Bemidji's Wil Hart won best male vocalist for his solo performance.

Nine teams competed in the event. Judges selected Happiness, Inc. of Cedar Rapids' Kennedy High School as grand champion.

Vocalmotive will hold a lasagna dinner fundraiser Friday in the BHS Commons. Tickets can be purchased for $16-18 between 3:30 and 5:30 p.m. at the BHS ticket booth.
