BYAC and Boys & Girls Club to host Snow Week Bash Friday

Teens in the Bemidji Area are invited to attend a communitywide "high school only" event on Friday, Feb. 19.

The event, hosted by the Bemidji Youth Advisory Commission and the Boys & Girls Club of the Bemidji Area, features a dodge ball tournament, live music, and a Halo 3 and Guitar Hero tournament.

"It's going to be huge. There's so much stuff going on," said BYAC advisor Joe Czapiewski. "I'm very hopeful that we'll see between 200-300 kids at this event. We'll be using the whole Boys & Girls Club."

The BYAC is a youth leadership group that was started in 1999 when the Bemidji City Council partnered with Healthy Community Healthy Kids to create a commission to give youth a more formal role within the city.

The Winter Bash is one of the BYAC's youth events, one of which has been its summer youth rally on June 17.

"We've done winter events like this before," Czapiewski said. "We've had good success with it in the past. This is a new collaboration with the Boys & Girls Club facility."

The Boys & Girls Club will use this event to also showcase its new teen center, which it unveiled in October, 2009.

The Winter Bash is only open to youth in grades 9-12. Cost is $6 per person.

"This event is something that will be a lot of fun for area high school kids and a chance for them to have a really good time with friends," Czapiewski said. "It's a good opportunity for kids to check out the new teen center. There's going to be plenty of stuff for them to do all evening long."

Doors open at 6:30 p.m.; dodge ball starts at 7 p.m.; Halo 3 and Guitar Hero play begins at 7:30 p.m.; and music starts at 8 p.m. Youth who leave the event are not allowed back in.

The cost is $15 for six-person dodge ball team if teams if they sign up before Friday, Feb. 15. The cost is $6 per dodge ball player for teams that sign up at the door. Sign-up sheets are available in area high school offices. Halo and Guitar Hero sign-up sheets are available at the event.
