Bemidji Area Schools District set to present school improvement goals

Every year the Bemidji Area Schools District determines its school improvement goals in order to improve student achievement.

Kathy Palm, District director of curriculum and administrative services, will present the district school improvement plans to the school board at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 16, in the Bemidji High School Media Center.

This year, Bemidji Area Schools did not make Annual Yearly Progress in American Indian student reading for the second year.

The No Child Left Behind Act requires the District to set aside 10 percent of District Title I funds for staff and teacher improvement. It must also develop a two-year district improvement plan. Northwest Service Cooperative AYP coordinators Becky Smith and Toni Cox guided the district team through the process of developing this plan.

The building principals are responsible for working with their site teams and staff development chairs. At the end of the school year, each building team will report their success at meeting their school improvement and staff development goals.

The final building reports will appear in the 2009-10 Annual Public Report on Curriculum, Instruction, and Student Achievement (Systems Accountability Report), which will be provided to the public Oct. 1, 2010.

In other business, the school board will:

- Accept a list of 2009-10 Challenged Resources Committee members, selected to review any challenged materials regarding the Review of Instructional Material and Alternative Education.

- Confirm the resignation of teacher Joan Pickenpack (1977-2010).

- Accept a donation from Zetah Construction of $9,268.74 for costs incurred for the construction of a soccer building at the field adjacent to the Bemidji Middle School.

- Adopt a resolution to enter into an agreement with Northland Community and Technical College for the purpose of providing a clinical internship for students enrolled in the Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant program.

- Adopt a resolution to enter in an agreement with the University of Washington curricula in occupational therapy and physical therapy.
