School Board pleased with superintendent's performance

Bemidji School Board members reported that Superintendent Jim Hess is doing a good job.

The Bemidji Area Schools Board of Education met in closed session Tuesday, July 7, and Tuesday, July 14, to conduct a performance evaluation of the superintendent.

According to a memo produced by Chairman Carol Johnson, the board is pleased with Hess's performance.

"His leadership focuses on working to create and maintain the best educational opportunities for all of our students," Johnson said at the School Board meeting Monday, July 20.

The board acknowledged the following goals were accomplished by Hess, including the renewal of the school referendum last fall and the forming of a committee, which analyzed the current building and facility.

"Dr. Hess is a strong advocate for our district and takes our message to the Legislature," Johnson said. "He uses good communication and good use of data in his decision making."

Hess has served two years of a three-year contract which expires June 30, 2010. The superintendent has requested no increase in base pay over the three-year contract term citing tough economic times.

The board will begin working on a new employment contract with the superintendent.
