Beltrami Electric Cooperative has named the Bemidji Skate & Bike Association the winner of the local 2010 Touchstone Energy Community Award.

The recognition comes with a $500 cash award donated to a community service organization/project of choice and a Touchstone Energy Community Award plaque honoring commitment to community.

The Bemidji Skate & Bike Association spearheaded a campaign to get a low?maintenance concrete skate park built in the community that will last for many decades, giving participants a legal place to gather and practice their skills. The official opening ceremony for phase one was held Nov. 5 with about 200 supporters and skateboarders in attendance. Fundraising for phase two of the project continues.

Touchstone Energy Community Award, in its seventh year, recognizes individuals or organizations for outstanding contributions to their community.

The Bemidji Skate & Bike Association's application will be submitted for consideration to the state Minnesota Touchstone Energy Community Award Committee. The state award recipient will be selected from numerous local award winners in Minnesota; the overall winner will receive $1,000 toward a community cause of choice. The state award will be presented in February during the Minnesota Rural Electric Association's annual meeting in St. Paul.
