The Business of the Week is the Got-R-Dunn Bar and Grill

Renee Dunn had never poured a drink when she and her boyfriend, Ken Castonguay opened the Got-R-Dunn bar in Tenstrike.

"Owning my own business is something I've always wanted to do," Dunn explained. "As far as running a bar goes, I am going in blind."

When the previous owner of the bar was getting ready to sell, she had been keeping in touch with Dunn, who at the time lived in Thief River Falls. Because Dunn is originally from this area, she was anxious to move back.

"I kept in contact with the lady that owned the bar before us and jumped at the chance to buy it and move home," she said.

When they first bought the bar, Dunn and Castonguay had a lot of work ahead of them.

"We put new flooring in the back, did a lot of cleaning, extended the bar, redid the walk-in cooler and worked on our living quarters in the back," she said.

With Tenstrike being a smaller town nestled between Bemidji and Blackduck, Dunn wasn't concerned her bar wouldn't have customers.

"People don't like to drive for drinks and a burger," she said. "We get a lot of locals that appreciate we're here and we appreciate them. I love working with people."

Unfortunately, three months after opening, the bar had a fire May 6. Luckily, nobody was injured and the bar area was saved. The damage was completely in Dunn and Castonguay's living quarters in the back.

"The bar wasn't hurt, so we did ok. We moved a camper next door to live in," she said. "The Blackduck Fire Department did an excellent job in saving our business. They were here within minutes and just did an outstanding job. We're very grateful for them."

Dunn said the bar was able to reopen only three days after the fire.

Aside from drinks, the Got-R-Dunn bar also has pizza and a reasonable food menu. The most expensive item is only $6.

"Everybody comes for the burgers," Castonguay said. "People think our burgers are great."

"This is our life," Dunn said. "We don't have any other employees, it is all us. We do get tired after awhile, but most the time its ok."

The Got-R-Dunn Bar and Grill opens daily seven days a week at 10 a.m. and is located on Main Street in Tenstrike.
