A video store no more: New fishing/tackle business open temporarily at former Blockbuster Video location

Monte Draper | Bemidji Pioneer Irv Reeves is temporarily renting out the former Blockbuster Video location for his business, Irv’s Just A While Tackle and Second Hand Store.

BEMIDJI — The Blockbuster signs are still up, but instead of finding “The Fisher King” or “American History X” here, you might find some Fishing Tackle and some Second-Hand American history.

Irv’s Just A While Tackle and Second Hand Store has opened in the former Blockbuster movies rental store in the strip mall at the intersection of Bemidji Avenue and Highway 197.

“We here temporarily,” said Irv Reeves, the business’ owner and operator. “People keep asking me how long am I going to be here, and I say ‘just a while.’”

The second hand and tackle store will be at 2308 Bemidji Ave. N No. 1, until the building’s owner, Tom Reise, finds an operation willing to sign a long-term lease.

“It’s like finding pieces of history and putting it back into circulation,” Reeves said of his business.

As for the Blockbuster signs still up outside, Reeves said it has caused some confusion for customers unaware the video store is out of business.

“It doesn’t help I haven’t changed the signs or anything,” Reeves said with a chuckle, adding he plans to take them down soon.

For now, Reeves is selling second-hand items he has purchased from estate sales, out-of-business locations and other places.

He’s been selling a lot of his items on eBay, he said, and has a few storage units full of merchandise, but now he has a physical shop for Bemidji residents to pursue...for just a while.

Just A While Tackle and Second Hand Store offers tackle, books, vinyl records, some DVDs and video games and other second hand items. It is open from noon to 7 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.
