Althea's Cakery to relocate to Fosston

BEMIDJI — Althea's Cakery in downtown Bemidji is closing and relocating to Fosston, Minn.

The bakery's last day at 108 Fourth St. NW will be Nov. 20 before it reopens in Fosston on Nov. 22.

Owner Melinda Sandwick said the move is for both personal and business reasons.

She and her husband, Dr. Todd Sandwick, welcomed their first child in July, she said, and she was finding it hard to be away from family with the daily commute to Bemidji from their home in Fosston.

On the business side, the Sandwicks had for a long time planned to open a location in Fosston. However, installing the new, industrial-sized oven at the Fosston location took longer than expected, she said. That is now ready to go, and her two-year lease in the Bemidji location also is ending, so the time was right to make the move, she said.

"This is one of the toughest decisions I've ever had to make," she said.

Sandwick said she enjoyed her time in Bemidji the past two years and said business has been steady, especially in the summer for weddings and other events. The business was basically running a skeleton crew, as it slows down in the winter months, she said. Her decorator, Linda Bissell, will be joining her at the Fosston location.

Sandwick said the business will honor all existing orders and will still take orders from Bemidji-area patrons, but will charge a delivery fee, which she said will be "minimal."

Sandwick also said she is working with some local vendors to possibly carry Althea's Cakery cupcakes and other items in single-serve capacities.

"I don't want to lose the fans we have here," she said.

Althea's Cakery in Fosston will be right next to the A&W on U.S. Highway 2 through town. The business will share space with Sandwick Orthodontics, operated by Melinda's husband Todd.
