UPDATED: Poor road conditions in Bemidji area result in 30 accidents, one fatal
WILTON -- A Solway woman died in one of 30 accidents in the Bemidji area on Monday, according to the Bemidji Police Department and the Minnesota State Patrol.
“Drivers are encouraged to slow down and use extreme caution while traveling in the
Bemidji area,” Bemidji Police Chief Mike Mastin said in a press release Monday afternoon. “There are numerous reports of black ice and poor road conditions throughout the area.”
Claudia Jeanne Leiby, 51, of Solway was driving a 2002 Ford pickup eastbound on U.S. Highway 2, east of Third Street in Wilton. A report from the Minnesota State Patrol said the truck entered the south ditch and rolled.
Six of the accidents reported Monday resulted in rollovers.
The release from Mastin said road conditions on the stretch of U.S. Highway 2 between the city of Wilton and Division Street on the west side of Bemidji were particularly bad.
“Road crews have been out working diligently to salt and sand the roadways,” the release said. “The public is encouraged to slow down on all area roads.”
Mastin also reminded drivers to move over for emergency vehicles and to not crowd snow plows on the road.
