Downed power line sparks fire

A tree downed by strong winds struck a power line and started a fire Tuesday afternoon, prompting a response from at least two area departments.

Beltrami County emergency services coordinator Beryl Wernberg said flames were “ripping through” a ditch near the intersection of County Highway 71 and Artesian Springs Road, about 9 miles north of Kelliher.

The Kelliher and Blackduck fire departments responded to the blaze just before 3:30 p.m., Wernberg said, and police were helping to direct traffic on smoke-filled roadways.

The fire was out within an hour, Wernberg said, but workers remained on scene repairing the power line.
