Bemidji man sentenced for threatening pregnant woman with knife

BEMIDJI ­– A Bemidji man will serve more than a year in jail after using a knife to threaten a woman carrying his child.

William Gerald Desjarlais, 27, was sentenced March 6 by Beltrami District Judge John Melbye. He received a sentence of 27 months at the St. Cloud Correctional Facility, and was given credit for 275 days spent in custody following the June 2012 assault.

Desjarlais returned to his home in the early morning hours of after a night of drinking prior to the incident.

Court documents state:

Desjarlais punched and choked the woman, who was seven months pregnant with his child at the time. He was upset because he believed the woman had left him in the Grand Forks area.

After a period of struggle, Desjarlais procured an 8- to 12-inch knife and held it to the woman’s face and neck.

Desjarlais was convicted in early January of felony second-degree domestic assault.
