Dennis "Mike" Michael Murphy

Dennis "Mike" Michael Murphy, 59, of Bemidji, died Friday, Dec. 26, 2008 at Neilson Place, Bemidji.

He was born April 4, 1949 in Grand Forks, N.D. to William and Agnes (Thompson) Murphy. He grew up in Fisher and graduated from Fisher High School in 1967. He graduated in 1973 from Brown College and pursued a career in radio announcing. He landed a job at KPRM in Park Rapids.

In 1977 he married Kathy Jay in Staples. In 1978 he moved to Bemidji and took a position at KKBJ where he stayed for 17 years, eventually becoming program director until his retirement in 1995.

He is survived by four sons: Dennis, of Bemidji, Randy, of Tampa, Fla., Shawn (Lynda) Couch, of Nevis, and Christian Couch, of Park Rapids; a daughter, Lacy (Edward) Higgins, of Park Rapids; six grandchildren; ex-wife, Kathy Couch; four brothers: William, of Witchita, Kan., Raymond, of Watertown, S.D., Ronald, of Grand Forks, N.D., and Thomas (Joyce), of Grand Forks, N.D.; two sisters: Dorothy (Morris) Gaines, of Dennison, Texas, and Margaret Tillman, of Grand Forks, N.D.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, James.

Casket bearers: Steve and Ricky Bratvold, Billy and Douglas Tillman, and Greg and Randy Murphy.

Funeral service: Friday, Jan. 2 at Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home in Bemidji, with Pastor Christopher Conger officiating.

Interment: Greenwood Cemetery, Bemidji.
