BEMIDJI -- The 2018 Beltrami County Relay for Life is different in a few ways from years past, but the objective remains the same.
This year, the 2018 Relay for Life will take place at the Beltrami County Fairgrounds after being held for years at the Sanford Center. Additionally, the local event will be shorter than in other years.
Relay for Life Event Lead Stephanie Moe said the change was based on public input.
“We made our changes this year based on feedback from the last three years and requests that people have made,” Moe said.
This year’s Relay for Life will take place Saturday, Sept. 22, from 11 a.m.-9 p.m. The event will feature a car show from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., hair cutting from 1 to 4 p.m., a silent auction from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and the Luminaria Ceremony at 6 p.m.
The Luminaria Ceremony is a tradition where lanterns are lit to represent a life, whether it’s a life taken by cancer, a survivor of cancer or a person still fighting the disease. The ceremony is one of a few traditional pieces to this year’s event, Moe said.
“We’ll still be having our Memory Garden, as we always do,” Moe said. “It’s a place for people to quietly reflect, whether it’s somber and they’re remembering someone they lost or jubilation because someone has beaten cancer. It’s a separate, beautiful area filled with flowers and colors.”
Other highlights of this year’s Relay for Life is the activities tent, which will feature entertainment such as a life-size operation game and outdoor Jenga. Additionally, this year’s event has the theme “Disney Wish Upon a Cure.”
Moe said those bringing children are encouraged to have them dress up as Disney characters and that most of the booths will feature Disney decorations.
