Red Lake man pleads guilty to robbery, burglary
BEMIDJI—A Red Lake man accused of burglary and robbery pleaded guilty to two felony charges Monday.
Derek Jon Paddy, 21, was charged with one count of simple robbery in October 2016. According to a criminal complaint, Paddy and another man attacked a woman and her boyfriend outside of their apartment in Wilton on Oct. 23, 2016.
The victim said she tried to call 911 on her phone, but that Paddy pointed a handgun at her, then took the cell phone. He pleaded not guilty to the charge of simple robbery in December.
Eight months after the robbery, Paddy was arrested along with David Cook, Jr., 21, of Bemidji, after Beltrami County deputies received a report of a burglary on June 18.
According to a criminal complaint, Paddy and Cook arrived at the victim's house at the 3300 block of Windy Hill Lane Southwest, forced their way inside, punched and kicked her and stole her purse. Paddy and Cook were arrested three days later, and Paddy was charged with one count of first-degree burglary.
He pleaded not guilty to the burglary charge Aug. 15.
Court records show Paddy changed both his pleas to guilty during a Monday hearing. He is scheduled to appear in court for sentencing Jan. 8. Cook has not entered a plea to the burglary charge and is set to appear in court for a plea hearing Nov. 21.
