Rollover near Bemidji results in criminal charges

BEMIDJI -- A Bemidji man was arrested over the Fourth of July weekend after he allegedly attempted to kill himself and a passenger by rolling his car on U.S. Highway 2.

Kenneth Oscar Osmundson, 24, of Bemidji was charged in Beltrami County Court on Wednesday with second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon and terroristic threats-reckless disregard.

Troopers with the Minnesota State Patrol responded to a rollover crash on U.S. Highway 2 at 6:15 p.m. on July 5 where Highway 2 crosses the Mississippi River.

Upon arrival, two victims were observed lying on the ground outside a vehicle, which was on its driver’s side door, according to court documents. Both the driver, Osmundson, and his female passenger were transported to Sanford Bemidji Medical Center.

The passenger told troopers Osmundson had been driving the vehicle westbound and lost control of the vehicle, according to a criminal complaint. She later told law enforcement she and Osmundson had been arguing and Osmundson started swerving the car, an Oldsmobile, back and forth while saying, “I want to kill myself and also I want to kill you,” court documents said. Osmundson denied making the remark.

Troopers observed evidence on the roadway showing that the Oldsmobile created a critical speed scuff and slid sideways in the grass until it tipped and rolled over, stopping on the driver’s side door.

Osmundson faces up to seven years in prison and a $14,000 fine for the second-degree assault charge and five years imprisonment and a $10,000 fine for the terroristic threats charge.

Osmundson is scheduled to appear in Beltrami County Court on Aug. 4. Osmundson bonded out of Beltrami County Jail on a $1,000 cash bail Wednesday.
