On Pelican Lake, disagreement over mussels

PELICAN LAKE, Minn. — Some people who live on a popular Otter Tail County lake say reports of problems with zebra mussels are overblown.

Jeff Peltier lives on Pelican Lake and teaches sailing. Pelter tells the Forum of Fargo that increased weed growth isn't as bad as it seems. Peltier says weeds are a little taller due to a longer and warmer growing season, and also seem taller because water levels are lower.

His view isn't shared by everyone. Erika Johnson of Detroit Lakes grew up at her parents' lake cabin. She says her family has seen dramatic changes from their dock, including runaway weeds and zebra mussel shells cutting swimmers' feet.

Johnson says arguing over weed differences from dock to dock distracts from action necessary to prevent the spread of invasive species.
