Sculpture found, but police still seek info about damaged art

BEMIDJI – A sculpture that was reported stolen Monday was actually in the owner’s possession, police said Tuesday.

The sculpture, called Cosmic Spheres, is part of downtown’s sculpture walk and was located at the corner of Beltrami Avenue Northwest and Sixth Street Northwest.

It was reported damaged early Saturday morning, said Police Capt. Jim Marcotte. Police tried to contact the owner, and left a voice message that it was damaged.

The statue was discovered missing Monday morning, and police put out a press release saying that it had been stolen. But the sculpture was actually picked up by the owner without the police department’s knowledge.

Marcotte said there was some miscommunication between police and the Parks and Recreation Department, who first discovered the statue was missing.

A press release from the police department Tuesday evening said the sculpture was missing several pieces and damaged beyond repair. Police are asking for any information on suspects who damaged it.
