Bemidji woman in car-motorcycle collision dies

BEMIDJI – A 38-year-old Bemidji woman who was injured in a crash southwest of town Sunday evening has died, the Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release Wednesday evening.

Michelle Sugar died at 6:26 p.m. Wednesday at Sanford Medical Center in Fargo, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Sugar was on a motorcycle with Bradley Mordini, 42, also of Bemidji, which was struck by a 1999 Toyota Camry driven by Steven Greenwood, 26, of Bemidji, the news release stated. Beltrami County deputies were called to the crash at 7:04 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of Becida Road Southwest and Fern Lake Road Southwest in Grant Valley Township.

Deputies found Sugar and Mordini in the roadway with “extreme injuries,” being helped by citizens who had come across the crash site. Deputies provided first aid until the arrival of Bemidji firefighters and Bemidji Ambulance, who transported the victims to Sanford Bemidji Medical Center. Both were airlifted to Fargo, where they were initially listed in critical condition.

According to the news release, officers determined that Greenwood had turned south onto Fern Lake Road from Becida Road, failed to yield right of way and turned in front of the motorcycle.

Greenwood was cited for criminal vehicular operation, pending the outcome of chemical tests. Deputies found marijuana in his possession and he told officers he had used some prior to the crash, according to the news release.

Neither Greenwood nor a passenger, Melissa Sue Beyer, 27, of Hopkins, was injured in the collision.

Bemidji police and the Minnesota State Patrol also responded to the crash.
