Early bird finds First National Bank downtown Dragon Boat Medallion

BEMIDJI -- For Nolan Rutledge, 9, the early bird may not have gotten the worm, but instead the early bird found the First National Bank Bemidji Downtown Dragon Boat Medallion worth $250.

"All night he was like 'we are getting up early to go get a paper' because we don't get a paper at our house," said Devonna Rutledge, Nolan's mom. "He wanted to get up right away and start looking so that was our plan."

Nolan's dad Tom Rutledge and his brother Spencer joined the family search be-ginning at 5:30 a.m. before finding the medallion on the Big Fat Hen in front of Ra-phael's Bakery downtown an hour later.

The nine-year-old was able to find the medallion on the first clue.

"We figured out 'one two buckle my show,' that riddle and then we figured 'nine, ten, big fat hen so we figured it must be there," Rutledge said.

Rutledge had been out the day before looking for the Medallion and was unable to find it, but the previous day's search paid off because he knew right where the hen statue was after doing the art walk.

"He couldn't stop talking about not finding it the day before," his mom said. "He just remembered seeing all the sculptors the day before and after seeing that first clue he figured out where to go."

The timing could not be better for the $250 prize, be-cause the family is going to take a vacation to Duluth where Rutledge can spend some of the money before it burns a hole in his pocket.

"I want to buy catchers gear with it and I am going to put some money in my bank," he said.
