Murder charges filed in death of Pine River man
WALKER - A 28-year-old Pine River man faces second-degree intentional murder for the death of a man earlier this month.
Dane Joseph Riley appeared Monday in Cass County District Court on charges of murder and interference with a dead body.
The charges stem from the death of Mark Andrew Hu-esman, 27, of Pine River.
At Riley's arraignment, District Judge David Harrington set unconditional bail at $1 million or $750,000 with conditions. His next court date is set for Aug. 13.
Cass County sheriff's officials received a report July 20 that no one had seen or heard from Huesman in a week.
A news release said investigators discovered Riley had picked up Huesman at a house sometime early July 14.
"Officers were alerted to the presence of a burn pit located near the residence," a news release states. "In the pit, officers found the remains of charred clothing."
Officers continued searching the property, where there were two areas where it appeared there had been a recent excavation. The release said Huesman's remains were then located.
"An adult female residing at the Riley residence told officers that she had been awakened by the sound of two gunshots" early July 14, the release said.
The woman told officers she went outside the home, where she saw Riley on top of Huesman and striking him in the chest.
Huesman begged Riley to stop, she said.
The woman told officers she screamed and Riley ordered her back inside. He later told her not to say anything.
The woman, who has not been identified, had been in custody as a "person of interest" in the case, but authorities released her late last week. At the time, the sheriff's office also said it identified a man as person of interest in the case. The man was in jail on an unrelated matter.
Huesman's body was sent to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is helping the Cass County Sheriff's Office with the case, which remains under investigation.
