Saum School Centennial planned

A Centennial celebration is being planned to celebrate the 100th Birthday of the Saum School in Saum.

The big white school opened in September of 1912 as the first new Consolidated School in Minnesota, having joined with the schools at Foy and Battle River. The school had 4 large classrooms with Domestic Science, Manual Training, a lunchroom and lavoratories in the basement and was built for between $8,000 and $10,000.

From 1924-1930, 27 high school students graduated from Saum School and the peak enrollment of 155 students was in 1915. Then the numbers began to dwindle until less than 25 pupils were being taught by Leona Nyberg in 1959-1960.

The decision was made to close the school and transport students to Kelliher School. The log school, which was used from 1903 to 1912, is still nearby and both schools were turned over to the Beltrami County Historical Society and they are maintained by the Saum Community Club.

The Community Club will host a celebration on the weekend of Aug. 10-12 this fall with registration and visiting Friday evening. Saturday there will be a turkey/pig roast with potluck at noon, program of memories and music, blowup activities for children and leftovers in the early evening. A Sunday morning church service at Tolgen Lutheran Church is planned with more visiting and snacks at the school afterward. Letters have been sent to many former students and Saum residents but everyone who is interested is invited to attend these events.

While cleaning the top floor of the school, various objects of interest were found and will be sold at a silent auction at the next fundraiser. That will be an everyone is invited pancake/waffle supper the evening May 19 from 4-7 pm at the school.

The "Saumthing to Celebrate" t-shirts are available now and will be sold at the pancake/waffle supper, at the Big Bog Festival in Kelliher July 14 and Aug. 10 and throughout that weekend at Saum.
