Track News - Bulldogs perform well at Beaver relays

Shaughnessy Ties Team and School Records

The NKB track team finally got back on the track to compete April 20 in the BSU Beaver Relays at Bemidji High School. Eleven schools sent athletes to compete under the mostly sunny, spring skies.

Despite both the boys and girls teams missing members, the Bulldogs placed well and put many season bests. In fact, the boys team had every member set at least one season best at the meet.

Junior Keith Shaughnessy had arguably the best day for the Bulldogs. Shaughnessy tied the Bulldog team record, the Northome-Kelliher team record and the Northome School record in the high jump. Shaughnessy cleared 6' for the first time in his career. The jump tied him with Gary Buentemeier and Jonny Bennett and placed him second for the meet. After tying the record, Shaughnessy had two more very strong jumps that just knocked the bar off at 6' 2".

In addition to the high jump, Shaughnessy sprinted to second place in the 400m dash with a 54.09 second run. He also was part of the third place 4x200m relay and the fourth place 4x400m relay teams.

Eighth grader Rachel Fahey also tallied places in four events. She was part of the 4x800m, 4x200m and 4x400 relays. She placed seventh in the discus with a personal best throw of 81' 1.5".

Sophomore Kristi Mills had a great day as well. Mills just missed the Bulldog and Blackduck School records in the 1600. Mills completed the four laps in 5:41.07 missing the record by 0.21 seconds.

Mills later took second in the 800m run with a 2:41.93. She was also part of the seventh place 4x400m relay.

Many other athletes placed in multiple events as well. Junior Tristan Williams sprinted to three places in the three sprint relays. Williams took third in the 4x200, fifth in the 4x100 and fourth in the 4x400.

Freshman Jeanette Frenzel placed in three relays as well. She was part of the sixth place 4x800m and 4x200m relays and seventh place 4x400m relay.

Senior Butch Strand placed third in the 4x800m relay and the 4x400m relay. Sophomore Michael Tate also placed in both the 4x800m and 4x400m relays. Junior Travis Olafson also placed on two relays (4x200m and 4x100m).

Senior Scott Pierson had his best throwing day of his career. Pierson tossed the discus a personal best 117' 5.5" and took second place. Later in the shot put, Pierson also set a personal best of 39' 9" and took fourth.

Junior Brandon Schmid placed fifth in the 4x100 and then took sixth in the 300m hurdles. Eighth grader Shadow Lievsay also placed twice. She ran in the 4x800m and 4x400m relays.

Senior Arthur Wirkus ran a strong leg in the 4x100m relay for a fifth place finish and junior Caleb Schneider ran a good anchor leg in the 4x800m relay to secure the third place finish.

For the girls, junior Justine Frenzel placed in the 4x200m relay, junior Carrie Carrigan took eighth in the shot put with a 29' 2" effort, eighth grader Brigette Williams placed in the 4x800m relay, while Michaela Williams placed as part of the 4x200m relay.
