Track Team Moves Outside

Boys set relay record

The full track team moved outdoors for the first time this year at the Deer River/Northland Invitational track meet April 12. It was the first time competing outside for the sprinters, hurdlers, many of the jumpers and shot putters. The six teams that competed in the meet were Bigfork, Cromwell, Deer River/Northland, Greenway/Nashwauk-Keewatin, Pequot Lakes and Northome/Kelliher/Blackduck. Medals were awarded to the top three finishers.

The day started out well in the afternoon sun. The 4x800 relays took to the track first. The girls team of freshman Jeanette Frenzel, eighth grader Megan Hudec, junior Katie Lutz and sophomore Kristi Mills combined for a 10:51 run that placed the girls third. The boys team of senior Butch Strand, sophomore Jarrett Burns, seventh grader Larry Pavelek and junior Caleb Schneider ran a 9:57 also good for third place.

Out in the field events, senior Scott Pierson set a season best in the discus with a throw of 110' 6" for a third place finish. Pierson also threw a personal best in shot put with a 37' 4" for fifth place. For the girls, junior Carrie Carrigan had a season best toss of 30' 9" and a third place finish.

Jumping also went well for the Bulldogs. Sophomore Kelly Heck took sixth in the long jump with a 12' 3.75" jump. Juniors Tristan Williams and Brandon Schmid with third and fourth in the triple jump with distances of 35' 4" and 34' respectively.

In the high jump, junior Keith Shaughnessy took second with a leap of 5' 9" just missing the six-foot mark. For the girls, Lutz topped 4' 6" and took second place. Frenzel tied with four girls at 4' 3" but missed placing due to misses.

Back on the track, the Bulldogs had two place in the boys 110m hurdles. Senior Tyler Hughes took fourth iwth a 20.5 second run while Schmid took sixth with a 20.9. Schmid also placed in the 300m hurdles by taking fourth with a 49.7.

For the sprints, junior Travis Olafson sprinted to a fourth place finish with 12.7 seconds in the 100m dash. Shaughnessy sprinted his way to first in the 400m with a 55.5 second run. Sophomore Paula Pearsall took sixth in the 400m for the girls with a 1:10.3.

In the 800m run, the Bulldogs placed two more for the boys. Strand raced to a second place finish with a 2:14.9 while eighth grader Matthew Jourdan took fourth with a 2:24.7.

The Bulldogs swept the 1600m runs. Mills won the girls with a incredible finishing sprint to take the lead just before the line. Mills won with a 5:59.0. In the boys race, Schneider sprinted out into the lead off the gun and was never challenged as he ran a 4:56.9 for the win.

In the 3200m run, Jourdan ran a personal best 11:45 to take fourth place. For the girls, Pearsall ran a 15:13 for fifth place while junior Justine Frenzel ran a 17:06 for sixth place.

In the sprint relays, the boys were able to set a new Bulldog team record in the 4x100. The team of Schmid, Hughes, Williams and Olafson sprinted to a 49.10. The run was fast enough to place third. The record just edged out last year's record setting run of 49.11 by Matthew Jedlicka, Zeke

Burtard, Olafson and Schmid. The boys 4x200m relay took second. The team of Williams, Shaughnessy, Hughes and Olafson sprinted to a 1:41. In the 4x400m relay, the team of Strand, Williams, Shaughnessy and Schneider sprinted to a second place finish with a strong run of 3:45.0.

For the girls, the team of Jeanette Frenzel, Heck, 8th grader Michaela Williams and Lutz ran a 2:06 and placed fourth in the 4x200. In the 4x100, Justine Frenzel, sophomore Tanyssa Olafson and 8th graders Brigette Wiliiams and Rachel Fahey sprinted to a 1:01.3 and fifth place. In the 4x400 relay, Jeanette Frenzel, Hudec, Lutz and Mills teamed up to run a 4:47.1 and took third.
