Emergency warning siren now in Waskish

WASKISH - A new warning and notification siren here will be used to notify residents and outdoor enthusiasts who visit the area when there are emergencies, including severe weather.

A group of Waskish women, informally known as "WOW" for the Women of Waskish, have been worked to obtain and install a warning siren, according to a news release from Beltrami County.

The release said Karen Corcoran, who suggested and researched the idea, and Patsy Petrowske, president of the Upper Red Lake Area Association, worked with Commissioner Quentin Fairbanks, who helped secure funding, on the project.

The siren will be activated by the Beltrami County Sheriff's Office.

A celebratory event marking the project will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Big Bog Interpretive Center in Big Bog State Park, north of Waskish.

The siren will be activated remotely to test the effectiveness of the emergency alert system. A reception will follow at the Tall Tales Tavern, 55738 Hillman Drive NE.

The public is invited to attend.
