Peterson asks House leadership to consider rural-friendly USPS reforms

WASHINGTON - U.S. Rep. Collin Peterson, D-Minn., recently signed on to a letter asking House leadership that any postal reform legislation consider the impacts of eliminating rural post offices.

"We understand the devastating impact that a post office closure can have on a small community," Peterson said in a news release. "It doesn't make a lot of sense to shut down rural post offices without first considering a new business model that incorporates many other reforms."

Peterson, along with 103 other House members signed the letter.

Several post office facilities in Minnesota are slated for closure sometime after May 15. The post office changes have significant impacts for Bemidji, where the mail sorting facility is among those expected to close. In addition, local overnight delivery would no longer be available as mail is sent to the Twin Cities for sorting.
