Deputy bitten by dog after confrontation with dog's owner

A Hubbard County Sheriff's deputy was severely bitten in the arm by a dog that was encouraged by its owner to attack, according to Hubbard County Sheriff Cory Aukes.

Jesse James Johnson, 30, of Laporte, was inside a vehicle parked in the driveway of a rural Laporte residence when deputies arrived Wednesday to apprehend an individual with an active felony arrest warrant, according to Aukes.

When confronted by officers, Johnson refused to comply and fled the scene in his vehicle. After an 11-mile pursuit, Johnson lost control of his vehicle on Hubbard County Road 37 and crashed.

Johnson refused to exit the vehicle and directed his two pit bull dogs, which were located in the vehicle with him, to attack the officers, according to Aukes.

One deputy was severely bitten in the arm by one of the dogs and was treated for his wounds at Sanford Bemidji Medical Center.

Johnson was taken into custody and is facing additional charges.
