Duluth man found dead outside retirement home after night of subzero temperatures

The body of a 95-year-old resident of Primrose Retirement Communities in Duluth was found outside the building Wednesday morning.

Clifford David Lindberg lived with his wife in the facility's independent living area, according to Duluth Police Department Public Information Officer James Hansen. "They are not being looked after regularly like the 17 assisted-care patients are," he said.

Officials believe Lindberg might have gone outside about 9:40 p.m. Tuesday, when electronic records show that a side door was opened at the facility at 724 Maple Grove Road.

"There are tracks that lead out from that door to where he was found," Hansen said.

Lindberg's wife reported him missing when she woke up Wednesday morning.

The staff called police shortly about 6:10 a.m. after they looked for him inside the building.

Lindberg was receiving hospice care for cancer, Hansen said, but it's not known if the disease or drugs contributed to his death. The medical examiner will try to determine the cause of death.

Temperatures in Duluth reached 8 below zero overnight, according to the National Weather Service, and were around 7 below at 6 a.m.

Primrose Retirement Communities' director didn't immediately return a call seeking comment.
