Park Rapids homecoming party results in citations, two hospitalized for alcohol poisoning

A weekend party following Park Rapids Area High School's homecoming festivities saw two teens admitted to the hospital for acute alcohol intoxication, one male arrested and several juveniles charged.

The activities on Discovery Circle come amid a new $1 million alcohol prevention grant to stem underage drinking and a Safe & Sober campaign being conducted by law enforcement officers statewide.

"There was nobody in custody," said Hubbard County Attorney Don Dearstyne Monday afternoon. "I've heard there was a bust but I have asked for the police reports" and have not received them.

Hubbard County deputies, backed up by Park Rapids police, raided the house at 16226 Discovery Circle at 4:12 a.m. Saturday after receiving a complaint of a "highly intoxicated 18-year-old female who was unresponsive," said Hubbard County Chief Dep. Scott Parks.

"Our officers responded along with North Ambulance and one male was arrested," Parks added.

"We wrote a few tickets over the weekend on some kids stuff," said Police Chief Terry Eilers. "Our guys responded with the Sheriff's Office over at Discovery Circle where five were consuming and two were taken over to the hospital."

"We keep working and trying to do what we can," Dearstyne said. "Education is the key and try to improve it. I think the Youth and Alcohol Drug Task Force accomplished a lot of things over the past three or four years.

"At least I have not seen a senior keg party since I've been in office, which is a good thing. I'm not saying there may not have been parties but the traditional senior keg party doesn't occur so I think we've educated some there."

Dearstyne said there has been one prosecution under the county's new social host ordinance law enacted last year. He said using that ordinance more should put the kibosh on home parties.

"I'm waiting to see the reports," he said of the most recent party. Those reports had not been released as of press time Tuesday.
