Blackduck welcomes six new teachers

Heidi VanderHagen

The beginning of a new school year is always a busy and exciting time for the staff and students at Blackduck Elementary and High Schools but it's even more busy and exciting for those staff members who are just joining the team. Blackduck is fortunate this year to welcome six new teachers and the community will be introduced to one of them each week for the first six weeks of school.

Heidi VanderHagen joins Blackduck's excellent Special Education team, working specifically with fourth, fifth and sixth graders in the elementary school.

She and her husband, Paul, moved the area when Paul was hired as the new Northome principal, which turned out to be a great thing for Blackduck as well, as she brings many and varied teaching experiences with her to enrich the lives of Blackduck students.

She has been teaching for nine years, including one year of high school science, four years of middle school science and four years of special education in Hutchinson. The VanderHagens have two "kids," their dog, Lucy and cat, Scooter.

When asked what her own favorite school memories were, she said that there were just too many to choose from but she does enjoy many outdoor activities and it seems she's moved to the right place to enjoy running, walking, camping and canoeing.

She also loves to travel and hopes to get her pilot's license in the future to fly single-engine planes.

Wow! Ambitious lady and a great addition to Blackduck education!
