Area restaurants add menu labeling through SHIP

Cass County Health, Human and Veteran Services has announced that a total of seven restaurants have implemented menu labeling for the Statewide Health Improvement Program.

Walker Bay Coffee, Lucky Moose Bar and Grill, The Village Square Café, The Woodsman Café, Lucette's Pizza and Pub, Dark Cravings and the Shante have all implemented menu labeling in Cass County. Each restaurant completed an assessment process, assisted by Cass County SHIP dietician Darcey Larsen. After assessing current menu favorites, restaurant owners altered some ingredients of menu items to reduce calories.

Participating restaurants were provided with the design and printing of new menus as well as dietician assisted assessment and training of staff.

SHIP, an integral part of Minnesota's nation-leading 2008 health reform law, strives to help Minnesotans lead longer, healthier lives by preventing the chronic disease risk factors of tobacco use and exposure, poor nutrition and physical inactivity. Together these three factors have been estimated to cause 35 percent of all annual deaths in the United States, or 800,000 deaths each year.

The current funding cycle of SHIP ends June 30. SHIP was included in Gov. Mark Dayton's proposed budget. The future funding of SHIP is unknown until a budget has been passed.
