Blackduck band is off to Washington, D.C.

Sixty-five Blackduck band members and 32 chaperones will leave Minnesota March 23 bound for the U.S. Capitol --Washington, D.C. The group is expected to return to Minnesota March 30

Doesn't seem like it has been two years now but it was in 2009 that 66 Blackduck band students and 22 chaperones boarded the bus, bound for Washington, D.C.

Every other year Blackduck band director Jeff Weaver takes band members and the chaperones on a performance tour to Washington, D.C.

"I wouldn't consider doing it if the students didn't get so much out of it," explained Weaver in an interview back in 2009.

This will mark Weaver's fourth trip to D.C. and it never gets old.

He also said that watching the kids explore and learn about the history of the city first hand is an amazing experience.

The group of 65 band members and 32 chaperones will leave Blackduck March 23 and travel to Toledo, OH, arriving the next day. While there, the will attend a two-hour clinic at the University of Toledo.

March 25 will have the group leaving for a trip to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Following that, they will leave Toledo and travel on to D.C., arriving that evening.

Saturday is a fun-filled packed day of touring and sight-seeing. They will be able to visit Arlington National Cemetery before taking in the mall and seeing monuments of D.C. The group will then attend a Medieval Time Dinner Theatre, then on to Union Station, ending the exhausting day with a moonlight bus tour of the monuments.

The group will leave the next morning for the Baltimore Hard Rock Cafe for dinner. Before attending a live stage performance of Shrek at the Baltimore Hippodrome Theatre, the group will be taking in the sights at Ft. McHenry where Francis Scott Key penned the National Anthem.

An exciting trip to the Stephan Udvar Hazy Air and Space Museum is planned for Sunday.

Monday before the band heads for Gettysburg College for a clinic at Sunderman Conservatory of Music.

Once there, they will watch a rehearsal of the Conservatory of Music wind ensemble. The evening will end with dinner at the historic Dobbin House.

Following breakfast Tuesday, they will get back on the bus and leave for Gettysburg National for a bus tour of the Gettysburg battleground.

The group will leave there and head back home, arriving at BSU in Bemidji for the Minnesota State High School League Group Contest, getting back to Blackduck in the early evening.
