Arrest work of many agencies

Beltrami County Sheriff Phil Hodapp and Red Lake Director of Public Safety William Brunelle reported Friday that a 24-year-old Red Lake man was arrested Thursday morning after a lengthy pursuit by several law enforcement agencies.

At approximately 5 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 25, the Beltrami County Sheriff's Office received a telephone call from a Turtle Lake Township resident regarding the theft of his motor vehicle from his residence and another vehicle that was on fire nearby.

Beltrami County deputies and the Bemidji Fire Department responded to the call, and after a brief investigation, learned that the burned vehicle had been stolen from a nearby residence, and another stolen vehicle had been located at the second residence, also on fire. Deputies learned that firearms had been taken by the suspect from the Turtle Lake Township residence.

The suspect was located by deputies as he traveled north. Deputies attempted to stop the vehicle. The suspect refused to stop and the deputies initiated a pursuit.

The suspect was pursued by Beltrami County deputies to the Red Lake Reservation line where Red Lake Police took over the pursuit. The suspect continued to lead Red Lake Police on a lengthy chase through the reservation which ended west of Red Lake on state Highway 1.

The suspect was apprehended after he attempted to run over Red Lake Tribal Law Enforcement officers. The suspect suffered a single gunshot wound.

Beltrami County deputies continued to investigate the trail the suspect had taken and determined the suspect had committed 10 thefts and burglaries in the Beltrami County area, as well as the theft of three motor vehicles. A majority of all the stolen property was recovered and has since been returned to the owners.

The suspect was treated for injuries at North Country Regional Hospital and remains in custody pending multiple charges of assault against Tribal Police officers, burglary, theft and fleeing. This case remains under investigation by the FBI, Red Lake Department of Public Safety, Beltrami County Sheriff's Office and Bemidji Police Department.

The Minnesota State Patrol and the United States Border Patrol assisted in this pursuit and follow-up investigation.
