Bemidji woman charged with assault following stabbing

A 22-year-old Bemidji woman was charged Tuesday for allegedly stabbing another woman Saturday evening.

Janelle Josephine Barrett was charged in Beltrami County District Court with felony third-degree assault causing substantial bodily harm.

Barrett is accused of stabbing a 22-year-old woman who was at Barrett's home Saturday to pick up a pair of house guests who were no longer wanted at the residence.

According to the criminal complaint, the victim was stabbed in the shoulder with a knife.

The wound required stitches. The victim was taken to North Country Regional Hospital, where she was treated and released.

Barrett, according to the complaint, had invited a man and his son to live with her, but the man has been convicted of domestic assault against her and is ordered to have no contact with her.

On Saturday, she had decided that the two individuals should leave and had ordered them out of her home, according to the complaint. The victim, also the man's girlfriend, arrived at the residence to pick them up.

The victim previously had dropped off food for the child, so she had demanded that Barrett return that food to her, according to the complaint.

A fight developed and Barrett allegedly stabbed the victim in the shoulder. According to the criminal complaint, Barrett then hid the knife in a garbage can.
